Duty and VAT calculator
Type in the car's value and the shipping. This is the same maths we use on our quotes, so the number you see here is the number you'll see from us.
Your car
Duty is 10% of the car's value. VAT is then 20% of the value, the shipping and the duty added together, which is why VAT is the bigger number. This is the tax only; your quote covers everything else.
A few things worth knowing
Transfer of Residence is applied for before the car ships
If you're moving your home to the UK and have owned the car for more than six months, you may not pay any tax at all. The application is the ToR1 on GOV.UK, and it needs to be approved before the car leaves Hong Kong. Our ToR checker tells you if your dates work.
Why we assume the full 10% duty
The UK has no trade deal with Hong Kong itself. A lower rate only applies if a car can prove it was made somewhere that has one, with paperwork from the original exporter, and a used car coming out of Hong Kong very rarely has that. So we quote the standard 10% and tell you if yours turns out to be the exception. We'd rather that than a surprise at the port.
Classics
A car over 30 years old, in original condition and of historical interest can come in with no duty and 5% VAT. HMRC decides what counts, and we prepare the evidence with you.
