Cancelling your Hong Kong registration
The TD184: fifteen days, five things
When a car leaves Hong Kong for good, its registration has to be cancelled. It's one form and one trip to a licensing office. The only real trap is the deadline.
Step by step
- 1
Keep the originals together
The original Vehicle Registration Document and, if it is still valid, the original vehicle licence. Copies will not do.
- 2
Hand the car over to us
We collect it and it is loaded and shipped. Until then, it stays registered and licensed in your name as normal.
- 3
Receive the shipping document
Once the car has been shipped out of Hong Kong permanently, we send you the shipping document. This is the proof the Transport Department needs.
- 4
Complete form TD184
The Notification for Cancellation of Vehicle Registration. It is available from the Transport Department.
- 5
Submit within 15 days
Take the TD184, the shipping document, the VRD, the licence if valid and your identity document to any Transport Department licensing office, within 15 days of the car being shipped out.

Why the timing works the way it does
You can't cancel a registration for a car that's still in Hong Kong. So the order is always: we collect it, it ships, we send you the shipping document, and then the TD184 goes in. That's why our planner shows the TD184 as a window after the sailing, not a job for your last week.
If you're flying out the same week, decide before you go who will take the form in, and tell us. We'll send the shipping document wherever it needs to be.
Questions
About the TD184
What if I have already left Hong Kong when the car ships?
It happens a lot, because most people fly out the week we collect. Talk to us before you go. The Transport Department sets the rules on who can submit the TD184 for you, so check with them, and we will make sure the shipping document reaches whoever is doing it.
Can I cancel the registration before the car ships?
No. The registration can only be cancelled once the car has been permanently shipped out of Hong Kong, which is why the shipping document is part of the submission.
What about my personalised plate?
Personalised marks belong to the Hong Kong system, not to the car. Ask the Transport Department about keeping or transferring the mark before you cancel. The car gets a UK registration here either way.
Do I need the Hong Kong registration document in the UK?
We need to see the registration details for customs and the DVLA. Keep a clear copy of the VRD before you hand the original in with the TD184.
Tell us about the car.
Make, model, year and where it is. A real person writes your quote, itemised line by line, usually the same working day.
