Questions
Getting started
How do I get a quote?
Fill in the quote form with the car, where it is and how to reach you. A real person writes the quote, itemised line by line, usually the same working day.
Is the quote free?
Yes. No deposit and no obligation.
Who is behind this website?
Import Hong Kong Cars is run by My Car Import, who have imported more than 20,000 cars into the UK from all over the world. The team, the site in Castle Donington and the customs and testing are all theirs.
What time zone are you in?
UK time, which is eight hours behind Hong Kong in winter and seven in summer. Ring +44 1332 810442 from Hong Kong, or 01332 810442 in the UK.
Questions
Timing
How long does it take?
3 to 6 weeks at sea, and around 12 to 14 weeks from the first paperwork to UK plates.
When should I start?
About eight weeks before you move, especially if you are applying for Transfer of Residence, which has to be approved before the car ships.
How long does DVLA registration take?
Around 10 working days through our dealer-level DVLA account, once the car has passed its test.
Questions
Tax and Transfer of Residence
How much is import duty and VAT?
Duty is 10% of the car’s value. VAT is 20% of the value plus shipping plus duty. A £20,000 car with £1,500 shipping pays £6,700 in total.
What is Transfer of Residence?
HMRC relief that lets people moving their main home to the UK bring their belongings, including a car, with no duty or VAT. You need to have lived outside the UK for 12 months and owned the car for six.
Do classic cars pay less?
Cars over 30 years old in original condition can come in with no duty and 5% VAT, if HMRC accepts them as historic.
Questions
Hong Kong paperwork
What is the TD184?
The Transport Department form to cancel a Hong Kong registration once the car has been permanently shipped out. It goes in within 15 days of shipping, with the shipping document, the VRD, the licence if valid and your ID.
Does the car need a valid licence to be exported?
Tell us its status on the quote form. If it is off the road, we arrange for it to be moved without being driven.
I have already left Hong Kong. Can you still help?
Yes. Tell us who has the keys and where the car is, and we will arrange collection with them.
Questions
The car
Is a Hong Kong car right-hand drive?
Yes. Hong Kong drives on the left, so its cars are built right-hand drive like UK cars.
What needs changing?
Usually the speedometer, to read in miles per hour, and the rear fog light. Hong Kong cars are no longer scrutinised for headlight compliance.
Can you import electric cars?
Yes. Teslas and other EVs come over regularly. The duty and VAT are the same as any other car.
Does it need an IVA test?
Under ten years old, yes. Ten and over takes an MOT, and over forty needs no MOT to be registered, as long as it has not been substantially changed.
Questions
Paying
When do I pay?
Your quote sets out what is due and when. Duty and VAT are due when the car clears UK customs.
Can I pay in Hong Kong dollars?
Ask us when you get your quote and we will tell you the payment options for your import.
Stuck on a term like ToR, IVA or NOVA? The glossary explains each one.
Nothing matches that. Ask us directly.
Tell us about the car.
Make, model, year and where it is. A real person writes your quote, itemised line by line, usually the same working day.
