The waiting is the hardest part for most people. The car has gone, the sea is large, and weeks can feel long when you are used to having a car on the drive.

Knowing where the time goes helps. A car from Hong Kong takes about 12 to 14 weeks from the first paperwork to UK plates. That figure is made up of distinct stages, each with its own typical duration, and some of them you can influence. This guide walks through them in order.

Allow about 12 to 14 weeks from the first paperwork to the car being registered in the UK. The longest single stage is the voyage, typically 3 to 6 weeks. DVLA registration through our dealer-level account takes around 10 working days. Everything else fits around those.

If you are relocating, add the time it takes to get Transfer of Residence relief approved before the car ships.

Stage by stage

The table below shows the stages with typical durations. These are typical figures, not guarantees. Individual cars vary, particularly at sea, and we will keep you updated on yours.

Before the car moves

This stage is entirely in your hands, and it is the one that most often decides whether everything else runs smoothly.

If you are moving your main home, Transfer of Residence relief can remove the import duty and VAT. ToR1 has to be applied for through GOV.UK and approved before the car ships. Start it early. A car that is ready to go but waiting for ToR approval is a delay that is entirely avoidable.

Gather your documents too. The Vehicle Registration Document and your identity document are the important ones. Our documents page lists the rest.

Collection and the voyage

We collect the car from your address in Hong Kong, in any of the eighteen districts on our collection map, and take it to the container-loading warehouse. It then travels in a container, usually shared with other cars, through Kwai Tsing and onto a vessel.

The voyage is typically 3 to 6 weeks. That range is honest. Vessels, routes and seasons vary, and we would rather tell you that than promise a date the sea will not keep. If your dates are tight, tell us when you ask for a quote. A dedicated 20ft container is also available on request, booked around your car. Our guide to shared container or your own explains the difference, and our shipping page covers the route from door to door.

Arrival and customs

This is where a lot of time can be lost, and where our setup saves it. We are fully authorised HMRC CDS customs agents, so the customs paperwork is organised before the car lands.

That means the container is not left at the port waiting for forms, and it is not running up port storage fees. It comes to our own facility at Castle Donington, Derbyshire, and we unload it there.

Conversions, testing and registration

Once unloaded, the car goes straight into our workshop on the same site. Hong Kong cars are right-hand drive and no longer scrutinised for headlight compliance, so the work is usually just the speedometer and a rear fog light.

Then the test. Cars under ten years old take an IVA test, and we run the first privately owned IVA testing centre for passenger vehicles in the UK, so there is no waiting for an outside slot. Cars ten years old and over take an MOT instead, and cars over forty do not need one, as long as they have not been substantially changed.

After testing, we register the car through our dealer-level DVLA account. That typically takes around 10 working days.

What speeds it up

Most delays come from paperwork rather than the car. A few things make a real difference:

  • Get ToR1 approved before you book collection, if you are relocating.
  • Have the original Vehicle Registration Document and your identity document ready before collection.
  • Tell us about any modifications at the quote stage, so test prep is planned rather than discovered.
  • Give clear address details for collection. Hong Kong has no postcodes, so directions help.
  • Sort UK insurance before the car is ready, so there is no gap at the end.
  • Ask about a dedicated container if your dates are fixed.

Staying in touch across time zones

The UK is 8 hours behind Hong Kong in winter and 7 in summer. Every stage is visible in the customer portal, so you can check progress whenever suits you. For anything else, call +44 1332 810442 or email [email protected] and we will pick it up during the UK day.
